This novel style of beer from the States has now become an established style – even though the name grates every time I say it. It’s an oxymoron - is it black or is it pale?
What it is though is a heavily hopped IPA using stereotypically American hops – citrus & pine resin flavours & aromas – but with a very dark malt that leaves minimal burnt or roast character. So it’s not just an over-the-top hoppy porter or stout.
I've even brewed one myself.
